Spring is in the Air!

“Nothing is permanent: The sun and the moon rise and then set, the bright, clear day is followed by the deep, dark night. From hour to hour, everything changes.” - Kalu Rinpoche

Of course, impermanence means things are changing all the time, but this time of year makes new beginnings all the more obvious as flowers start to bloom, leaves begin to grow and many animals lay eggs or give birth. This is all the more obvious at Land of Joy where we are surrounded by beautiful countryside!

Helping our Feathered Friends

As a centre, we strive to help all sentient beings including those who live in the woodland within the grounds. One of our kind supporters donated some wonderful bird boxes specifically designed to help sparrows, swifts and swallows. Here's Fichou getting one of the sparrow houses ready...

Retreat Season in Full Swing

Roy Sutherwood's Nature of the Mind retreat was quickly followed by Venerable Robina's dynamic teachings on the 'Heart Sutra', one of our biggest groups so far. The house was full of enthusiastic retreatants soaking up the wonderful teachings who left some lovely comments for us in their feedback...

"This retreat has given so much joy and wisdom"
"Will never forget this week, big appreciation for all you do"
"I have never experienced so much love in one place"
Due to unforeseen circumstances we are sorry to announce Geshe Dorji Damdul is now unable to come to Land of Joy this May and therefore his Bodhichitta Retreat has had to be cancelled. Geshe La is still keen to lead a retreat here, so keep an eye out for updates.

Upcoming Events....

We have a jam-packed calendar this year with lots of wonderful retreats on offer. There are introductions for those new to Buddhism, plus intermediate courses and full tantric approximation retreats.

Bookings are still open for those coming up in April, Buddhism in a Nutshell with Steff Hill, 14th-16th April (perfect for beginners) and Touching the Void with Geshe Graham, 21st - 29th April as well as others throughout the year.

Drum Update

Remember the drum restoration project Fichou was building the wooden surround for a couple of months ago? Here's Ray making it look beautiful with his wonderful artistic skills. Once finished, his next project will be painting a White Tara as instructed by Osel during his visit to Land of Joy when he said if anyone arrives here with a negative mind, seeing White Tara will bless their mind, making it positive.

We'll be sure to keep you updated on its progress!

Update on woodland management at Land of Joy, March 2017
By Pauline Barber, Woodland & Wildlife Manager at Land of Joy

We have been busy in the woodlands this winter, with the thinning by volunteers of a large tract of birch plantation situated close to the house. Contractors have cleared & stump treated a vast forest of rhododendron ponticum in the steep ravine, using large & expensive machinery to tackle the difficult terrain. Other contractors have felled and removed the 1 ha area of sitka spruce and larch plantation, though much work is needed by volunteers to clear the brash from the site ready for replanting with broadleaved trees & shrubs in November.

Top photo: Middle of clear-fell area- note large amounts of ‘brash’ in the foreground.

Bottom Photo: Bottom of thinned birch plantation - multiple stems have been removed to enable single birch trees to grow.

Many thanks as always to all our supporters who help us in so many different ways.

Keep Rejoicing!
