About the Retreat

During this retreat weekend, we will reflect on vulnerability, empathy, and resilience. We will explore what can cause us to feel overwhelmed and emotionally disconnect. We will learn techniques empowering us to relate to ourselves and to others in more balanced ways. We will explore how to genuinely understand the emotions of other people, allowing for more compassion towards ourselves and others. We will use the process of Empathy Circles to deepen our empathetic listening.

This course will help you to:

Develop a calmer more focused mind, better self-understanding, stronger emotional resilience, and therefore real empathy for others

Identify what pushes you out of balance allowing the space for wiser choices

Build closer, more nurturing relationships with family, friends, and co-workers

Deepen your active listening and embodied speech

This course is for people of all ages and backgrounds. It is designed for those who want to strengthen their inner resources which help build deep and sustainable connections and relationships. The content is rooted in Buddhist philosophy and psychology and is supported by scientific research, positive psychology, and other wisdom traditions.

About the Teacher

Since attending a meditation course in 1976 Wendy has studied and worked in 5, very different, Buddhist centres and has benefited from many retreats. Having met Lama Thubten Yeshe in 1977 she was inspired by his vision of Universal Education and did post graduate work with the aim of incorporating some of his ideas into schools.

Wendy has many years of experience working in education – as a teacher, university lecturer, local education advisor and consultant. This provided her with the skills and passion to develop and deliver training programmes. She has been involved in the development of The Foundation for Developing Compassion and Wisdom (FDCW) as a Board member since 2005. As a senior FDCW faculty member, teaching internationally at all levels of FDCW’s programmes, Wendy enjoys facilitating workshops exploring how universal values can bring opportunities for personal development, cross-cultural peaceful co-existence and ethical dialogue.

A Way to Say Thank You

As we don’t receive any subsidies from other organisations we rely solely on the kind generosity of others. If you would like to make a donation to help us cover our considerable monthly costs (including via an online bank transfer or postal cheque), please choose the amount you would like to offer using the form below (or enter a custom amount), click ‘Donate’, then choose a payment method and provide all the details we require to process your donation. Your generosity will help us continue to offer beneficial services to yourself and others.

You may also like to make a regular contribution to the centre by becoming a Branch of Joy. This kind of support gifts us a steady and ongoing income, which in turn provides the confidence and means for us to continue to flourish for many years to come.

Thank you and may you be happy.

Reclaim Gift Aid

Boost your donations by 25% at no cost to you! A Gift Aid declaration allows us to claim tax back on eligible donations. It means that for every £1 you donate to we can claim back 25p, at no extra cost to you.

By ticking the "Yes" box, I confirm I understand that if I pay less Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all my donations in that tax year I may be asked to pay any difference. I understand that Land of Joy will reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 that I give.

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid does not cost you a penny more, but can add an additional 25p to every £1 you donate. When we receive a donation from a UK taxpayer, we're entitled to claim an amount of tax (calculated at the basic rate of income tax in that year) paid on that donation. Once you have given your permission for us to do this on your behalf, there is no need for you to do anything else.

All that is required is that you must be a taxpayer and that would have paid or will pay sufficient Income and/or Capital Gains Tax to cover all the Gift Aid claimed on all your donations in that tax year. Please note that it is your responsibility to pay any difference.

The amount of tax we claim will be 25% of the total value of your donations in that tax year. Furthermore, if you are a higher taxpayer, you are also entitled to claim the difference between the basic rate which we will claim and the amount of tax you have actually paid. For further details on how you can do this, please contact your tax office. If your tax situation changes and your gifts will no longer be eligible for the Gift Aid scheme please contact us and we will amend your record accordingly.
