About the Retreat

Many students have the commitment to complete the nine Ngöndro, or preliminary practices, associated with Vajrayana practice or have been given some or all of them to complete by their teacher.

Among these is the practice of offering 111,000 water bowls. Making offerings is said to accumulate great merit, helps us generate a mind of generosity and is also a specific antidote to miserliness. The water bowl offerings, as with the other eight preliminary practices (prostrations, Vajrasattva, refuge, mandala offerings, guru yoga, Dorje Khadro, tsa-tsas and Samayavajra), are an extraordinary way to accumulate merit and to purify negative actions in order to quickly generate realisations on the path.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche has given special permission for this practice to be completed by groups of people who, in performing the practice, can each  accumulate the full count of offerings made during the retreat.

Land of Joy is happy to be able to offer this precious opportunity for people to complete this essential practice.

If the full 111,000 offerings is not reached during the retreat, retreatants may keep the total accumulated and complete the full number at a later date There is no need to maintain the practice in between.

About the Facilitators

Fichou (Christian) met Lama Zopa Rinpoche and Lama Yeshe at Kopan monastery in 1982 for the first time. Since then he is committed to try his best to follow the advice Lama Zopa Rinpoche gave him. He is a long term practitioner who uses his time and practice to listen, reflect and meditate about the teachings of the Buddha.

Ray has been trying to practice the dharma for over 40 years. He has spent much of life studying, meditating and offering service in various dharma centres around the world and is also a fully trained thangka artist. He has a wealth of experience doing meditation retreats both short and long term and is able to draw on this to encourage and inspire others in their sitting practice.

Reclaim Gift Aid

Boost your donations by 25% at no cost to you! A Gift Aid declaration allows us to claim tax back on eligible donations. It means that for every £1 you donate to we can claim back 25p, at no extra cost to you.

By ticking the "Yes" box, I confirm I understand that if I pay less Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all my donations in that tax year I may be asked to pay any difference. I understand that Land of Joy will reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 that I give.

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid does not cost you a penny more, but can add an additional 25p to every £1 you donate. When we receive a donation from a UK taxpayer, we're entitled to claim an amount of tax (calculated at the basic rate of income tax in that year) paid on that donation. Once you have given your permission for us to do this on your behalf, there is no need for you to do anything else.

All that is required is that you must be a taxpayer and that would have paid or will pay sufficient Income and/or Capital Gains Tax to cover all the Gift Aid claimed on all your donations in that tax year. Please note that it is your responsibility to pay any difference.

The amount of tax we claim will be 25% of the total value of your donations in that tax year. Furthermore, if you are a higher taxpayer, you are also entitled to claim the difference between the basic rate which we will claim and the amount of tax you have actually paid. For further details on how you can do this, please contact your tax office. If your tax situation changes and your gifts will no longer be eligible for the Gift Aid scheme please contact us and we will amend your record accordingly.
